MINUTES – May 13, 2024

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen met in a Regular Scheduled Meeting with the following members present: Mayor Maurice Harris, Alderwoman Veronica Hill, Alderman Justin Bessix, Alderwoman Edna Mitchel, Alderman Jerome Martin and Alderman John Carriere. Also present was Town Attorney Gerard Morgan and CPA Jacob Waguespack.

Roll Call: Mayor Harris opened the meeting with a Roll Call and Pledge . Prayer was led by Donald Ray Patterson.



APPROVAL OF MINUTES: A motion was made by Alderman Martin to approve the minutes from the April 8, 2024 meeting. Motion was seconded by Alderman Bessix and unanimously approved by the Board.

OLD BUSINESS: CPA Waguespack presented the March financials to the Board. Mr. Waguespack explained that the Town is still in good shape. Sale Taxes continue to still be up. Collection rate is still good. No problems.

Policy updates tabled from last month were discussed with a Motion to accept them by Alderman Carriere. Motion seconded by Alderman Martin and unanimously approved by the Board.

NEW BUSINESS; CPA Tony Ruiz presented his final audit findings to the Board. There was one issue that was a repeat from last audit. He informed the Board that the Town is in good shape.

A motion to adopt the Resolution for Surplus Equipment was made by Alderman Martin. Motion seconded by Alderwoman Mitchel and unanimously approved by the Board.

Mayor Harris read the Proclamation for Fair Housing Month.

Motion to continue support of Spring Gospel Festival was made by Alderman Carriere. Motion seconded by Alderwoman Hill and unanimously approved by the Board. Date for Festival has been set at June 8th.

The Ordinance to set rates for Public Request Records was introduced.

Plans for the Annual Fall Festival were discussed and two dates have tentatively been set. October 25, 26 and 27th. or November 8, 9 and 10th.

Mayor Harris announced that there will be a Juneteenth Parade on June 15th in Grosse Tete.

FIRE: Chief Washington reported that the meeting was very good. All units are in operation except Rescue 8.

POLICE: Chief Anderson reported the situation with Jr. Mart’s ATM. One arrest has been made with more to come. He informed the Board that the Police Station had a hot water leak which caused damage to the walls. Insurance adjuster was there today to do a report. He asked the Board to consider hiring another full-time officer for his department.

MAINTENANCE: Public Works Director Lee Butler informed the Board that everything is good at this time. He is due an inspection tomorrow.


There were no committee reports due to the weather alert we were under.

ADJOURN: There being no further business, meeting was adjourned with a motion from Alderman Carriere, seconded by Alderwoman Hill.
